On Thursday, the Construction Sector Development Agency (SSVA) hosted a delegation from the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of the Republic of Sakartvelo, interested in Lithuania's experience in certifying the energy performance of buildings.

SSVA is responsible for the management and maintenance of the register of energy performance certificates for buildings (EPCs) and the certification of EPC experts, under the authority of the Ministry of Environment.

As part of the energy reforms in Sakartvel, the EU Directive establishing minimum requirements and general principles for calculating energy performance, as well as the legal framework in Lithuania, were discussed with Sakartvel representatives.

The energy performance certification and design programmes for buildings managed by SSVA, their operating principles and their potential, received much attention.

"We are pleased to share the successful Lithuanian experience gained over almost two decades and our vision for the future of energy performance certification. We believe that cross-border cooperation will allow us to work faster together towards our common goal of living in quality and energy efficient buildings", says Aidas Vaičiulis, Director of SSVA.

Buildings are the largest energy consumer in Europe, accounting for around 40% of the EU's energy consumption and 36% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Heating, cooling and domestic hot water account for 80% of the energy consumed by the population.

Currently, around 35% of buildings in the EU are over 50 years old and almost 75% are energy inefficient.

In Lithuania last year, a total of 31,700 thousand buildings were registered. PEN certificates were registered in Lithuania for a total of 31,000 buildings, of which almost 6,500 were class A, A+ and A++.
